Dual Universe, the sci-fi sandbox MMO from Novaquark, is shutting down its official servers on August 27, 2025 at 14:00 UTC (10:00 AM EDT). The announcement, shared via Novaquark’s website and social channels, marks the end of the live MMO version—but not necessarily the end of the universe itself.
In the official statement, Novaquark confirmed that players will be able to transition to a standalone, self-hosted version of the game called myDU. This $35 build allows players to run their own servers, preserving their creations, constructs, and blueprints. “As the official Dual Universe MMO server embarks on its grand finale,” the studio wrote, “the journey of Noveans will continue… in myDU.”
The move wasn’t entirely unexpected. Since its commercial launch in 2022, Dual Universe has struggled to maintain momentum. Technical challenges, limited marketing, and low player retention quietly dimmed its star—despite a dedicated community and a promising voxel-based building system.
This week’s announcement also included details about refunds for unused subscription time via Xsolla, as well as plans to eventually open source the server and client code. Novaquark says legal and technical work is still needed, but the goal is to allow longtime players to carry the torch forward, with fewer constraints.
It’s a bittersweet moment for many fans. On Reddit, longtime players reflected on the game’s unrealized potential and the emotional weight of watching a digital world close its doors. For now, the final chapter of Dual Universe won’t be a total wipe—but rather a handoff, giving the reins to the community that kept it alive.
