Bigger isn’t always better—at least not in Battlefield. While Battlefield 2042 made headlines for cramming 128 players into a single match, the experiment quickly showed its flaws. Chaos often outweighed cohesion, and players felt the scale diluted the series’ tactical roots. Now, with Battlefield 6 right around the corner, DICE is course-correcting.
In an interview with Edge Magazine (issue 415), design director Shashank Uchil confirmed that Battlefield 6 will return to the series-standard 64-player matches, saying 128 “just didn’t catch on.” He compared the shift to a band trying a new sound: “Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn’t… we are subservient to the players.” The team has been monitoring forums, Reddit, and ongoing playtests closely to decide what sticks.
Last month’s open beta weekends gave players a hands-on look at its large-scale battles and destructive environments, while also surfacing feedback about menus and user interface. It was a clear signal that Battlefield is trying to strike a balance between spectacle and readability rather than simply leaning on bigger numbers.
Meanwhile, Battlefield Labs is continuing with its battle royale playtest phase alongside large maps like Mirak Valley and Operation Firestorm—environments originally designed with 128 players in mind but now being tested and rebalanced for 64-player skirmishes. That testing wave has already attracted plenty of attention and a surge of scam invites attempting to phish unsuspecting players. DICE has emphasized that Battlefield Labs sign-ups are the only legitimate way to access these phases.
With the open beta and ongoing playtests showing strong support for 64-player matches and the game in general, the future looks extremely bright for the next installment in the iconic series. Battlefield 6 launches October 10, on PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X|S.
