The Sword of Sargeras is one of longest-running mysteries in World of Warcraft, a Titan-sized reminder of unfinished business stabbed deep into Azeroth’s surface. The massive blade has loomed over Silithus since Legion’s finale, and for years, players have wondered when Blizzard would finally deal with it.
In an exclusive interview with IGN, WoW game director Ion Hazzikostas and lead UX designer Crash Reed confirmed that the sword will be addressed “before the Worldsoul Saga is over.” It’s the clearest acknowledgment yet that the narrative thread, once treated as a running joke inside Blizzard, still has a planned resolution. For years, whenever fans asked about the sword, developers cheekily replied with the now-famous line, “What sword?” — a meme born from BlizzCon 2023. Even Chris Metzen leaned into the gag while promising it would eventually be resolved.
For those catching up, the Worldsoul Saga is a three-part narrative arc that began with The War Within (released August 26, 2024), continues with Midnight, and will conclude with The Last Titan. Each expansion explores the deeper cosmology of Azeroth and its connection to the Titans. Midnight, set for release early next year, returns players to Quel’Thalas and the Void’s growing influence on Azeroth, introducing new zones, player housing, and a host of systemic changes.
As for the sword itself, it’s been buried since Sargeras’s defeat in Legion (now playable in Remix form), when the Titan plunged it into the planet’s crust as a final act of defiance. Though WoW players managed to heal the immediate corruption during Battle for Azeroth, the weapon itself has since remained untouched. It’s visible from multiple zones yet completely unmentioned in recent storylines, leading fans to joke that everyone in Azeroth simply agreed to ignore a planet-sized problem.
That silence has now broken. While Hazzikostas and Reed avoided specific details, their confirmation means the Sword of Sargeras is still part of the long-term story roadmap. Given that Midnight doesn’t appear to involve it based on early previews, it’s likely the resolution will come in The Last Titan, possibly tying into the saga’s broader themes of cosmic balance and the nature of Azeroth’s own soul.
It’s been a long game, and the sword’s absence from recent expansions has only amplified its mythic weight. But Blizzard has built a reputation on saving its biggest twists for the end, from Illidan’s return in Legion to the Shadowlands reveal. It wouldn’t be surprising if the studio is once again holding its cards close.
For now, World of Warcraft‘s infamous sword remains where it’s always been: buried, burning faintly in the sands of Silithus. But at least players finally have confirmation that it hasn’t been forgotten, and that when Blizzard finally decides to pull it free, it’s going to matter.
