Server meltdowns have become a rite of passage for online shooters, and live service games in general. Embark Studios, however, wants to get ahead of the problem with a free-for-all stress test next month before Arc Raiders officially launches at the end of October. The stress test will give fans one more crack at the upcoming extraction shooter while also giving its servers one last trial by fire ahead of the game’s release.
The Server Slam open playtest will run from October 17 to 19 on PC, PS5, and Xbox Series X|S. Anyone can drop in. No codes required. Access will roll out gradually on day one to ease the load, with the goal of making sure the backend doesn’t collapse under real-world demand. Progress from the playtest won’t carry over to the full game but the team is bribing everyone to participate with an exclusive backpack cosmetic that will be redeemable at launch.
Set to fully launch October 30, Arc Raiders will be available on Steam, Epic Games Store, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X|S. The game was first announced in 2021 as a co-op third-person shooter before being retooled into a PvPvE extraction game in 2023—hardly surprising, given how everyone seemed to be muscling into the extraction craze. Previous tests, including closed alphas and earlier open sessions, have already shaped balance and mechanics.
During the final stress test, players will drop into the Dam Battlegrounds map to loot, craft, and complete quests. The full extraction loop will be playable, though meta-progression and story content are being held back for launch. Embark says this event is critical to ensuring the game feels polished and balanced on release day, a lesson learned from recent high-profile launches where servers buckled under day-one demand.
If nothing else, the Server Slam gives players a free preview and Embark one more chance to smooth out the bumps. With the full launch just weeks away, how well Arc Raiders holds up under pressure could determine whether it lands as another crowded face in the extraction shooter genre—or flip the script and stand out. Pre-orders are now open on your platform of choice.
