Night City is back on the airwaves, and no, we’re not talking about another expansion for Cyberpunk 2077. CD PROJEKT RED just announced Cyberpunk: Edgerunners 2, a brand-new standalone anime series in the works with animation powerhouse Studio TRIGGER, officially revealed during this year’s Anime Expo in Los Angeles.
The original Edgerunners was a lightning rod—equal parts chaotic, heart-wrenching, and blood-soaked—and it helped spark a massive second wind for Cyberpunk 2077 back in 2022. The bar is high, but with TRIGGER back on board, CD PROJEKT RED clearly wants to prove that lightning can strike twice.
This time around, veteran director Hiroyuki Imaishi (Promare, Gurren Lagann) is passing the torch to Kai Ikarashi (Edgerunners, SSSS.Gridman), who’ll be making his directorial debut with the sequel. In a heartfelt video message, Ikarashi said he’s aiming for a “raw, real chronicle of redemption and revenge”—meaning Edgerunners 2 isn’t just a rehash but a fresh dive into the dark alleys of Night City.
The new series promises all-new characters and stories, confirming that David and Lucy’s tragic tale is truly in the rear-view mirror. Still, Emi Lo (Lucy) and Zach Aguilar (David) were both on hand at the Anime Expo panel to celebrate the show’s legacy, alongside writer-producer Bartosz Sztybor and host Joey “The Anime Man” Bizinger.
CD PROJEKT RED also revealed the official logo and poster art for Edgerunners 2—with a sleek, blood-red design that screams neon noir—and teased a closed-door sneak peek at never-before-seen footage during Studio TRIGGER’s later panel.
For fans still nursing cyberpsychosis after the first season’s emotional gut-punch, the idea of revisiting Night City with fresh eyes, new characters, and TRIGGER’s signature bombast is a tantalizing one. The show’s creative team includes heavy-hitters like character designer Kanno Ichigo (Promare, Edgerunners) and screenwriter Masahiko Otsuka (Gurren Lagann, Promare), so expect high-octane action, existential dread, and at least one jaw-dropping twist.
CD PROJEKT RED says that while the series is in production, the release date remains TBA—but it’s already confirmed for Netflix. Given the first season’s viral success and Cyberpunk 2077’s redemption arc with Phantom Liberty, it’s clear the franchise has more cyber-blood to spill.
Fans hoping for a reunion with Edgerunners alumni may be disappointed, but there’s no shortage of stories left to tell in Night City—a dystopia that keeps chewing people up and spitting them out. Whether Edgerunners 2 can hit the same cultural nerve as the original remains to be seen, but at least we know one thing for sure: Night City never dies.
