After Resident Evil 7 went full first-person horror and left players paralyzed with fear, Capcom is dialing things back just a little in Resident Evil: Requiem—or will at least be giving you the option to tone down the terror.
Director Koshi Nakanishi admits the first-person immersion of Resident Evil 7 may have swung too far into nightmare territory. In an exclusive with GamesRadar+, he acknowledged that “some people couldn’t handle it, and either couldn’t finish or didn’t even start it,” explaining the choice to introduce a third-person mode in Resident Evil Requiem to “make it slightly easier to deal with.”
This shift isn’t just about ease—it’s part of a broader strategy to balance accessibility with terror. Requiem will let players switch between first- and third-person perspectives, offering flexibility without sacrificing the creep factor.
The game is shaping up as a throwback to classic Resident Evil, featuring returning locations like Raccoon City and detective work from new lead Grace Ashcroft, while staying steeped in survival horror staples like limited ammo and puzzles. It’s also supported by the RE Engine’s moody lighting, which leans heavily into darkness as a gameplay mechanic.
Resident Evil Requiem, the ninth mainline game in the series, releases February 27, 2026 on PS5, Xbox Series X/S, and PC—and now with a horror experience everyone can … well, handle a little better.
