Upcoming extraction RPG Vaultbreakers is breaking more than vaults this week—it’s breaking into bigger leagues. Danish indie studio BetaDwarf, best known for Minion Masters and Forced, just announced a major investment from none other than Square Enix, giving their upcoming co-op action RPG a serious shot in the arm.

The news dropped alongside the first full gameplay trailer for Vaultbreakers and the launch of a new public playtest running through July 9. If you’ve been curious about the top-down action looter, now’s your chance to grab a key via the Vaultbreakers official site or through Twitch Drops and see how it plays for yourself.

Vaultbreakers pitches itself as a high-stakes action RPG with a focus on heroic brawler combat, dynamic world exploration, and both PvE and PvPvE modes. Players can fight solo or team up to battle bosses, reclaim relics, and—most importantly—escape with the loot. The game’s world is designed to react to player choices, promising runs that won’t feel like cookie-cutter grinds.

The January playtest already attracted over 50,000 players and helped BetaDwarf fine-tune its vision based on community feedback. Two major requests—Solo Queue and a dedicated PvE-only mode—are now being fast-tracked. Solo Queue is playable in this week’s test, while PvE-only is expected to arrive later this year.

For BetaDwarf, the Square Enix investment represents more than just funding.

“Being accompanied by Square Enix on our journey is an amazing access to a combination of knowledge, talent, and resources,” said Steffen Kabbelgaard, CEO and Game Director at BetaDwarf. “We are already very far with our dream game Vaultbreakers: we have a huge amazing community, and we have already run 15+ tests with more than 50,000 players who constantly enable us to refine. So getting this additional support feels amazing when we are far into production already. I can really see how this enables a home run vs. having just started on an uncertain journey—yeah, I’m just really excited about our situation!”

Square Enix, for its part, sees Vaultbreakers as a natural fit for its growing interest in multiplayer-first experiences—an area the publisher has been more vocal about in recent years.

“Square Enix is always looking for high-quality games and talented development studios. When I played Vaultbreakers, I was genuinely excited by the experience of connecting with other players and exploring its rich game world. […] After visiting BetaDwarf and learning about the team’s mission and passion, we decided to invest in them to help realize their dream and bring this game to players around the world.”

While there’s no official release date yet, the ongoing playtests and the arrival of the game’s first real trailer suggest that Vaultbreakers is picking up speed fast. The partnership adds momentum to what BetaDwarf hopes will be a standout entry in the crowded co-op survival and action RPG space.

Players can grab a playtest key now, request access through the Steam Page, or tune in to Twitch streams to earn one through Twitch Drops until July 9. The gameplay trailer is also live and shows off everything from chaotic boss fights to co-op carnage to fast-paced escapes.

If you’re into co-op looter brawlers or games like Risk of Rain 2 and Helldivers 2, this one might be worth keeping an eye on. Check out the first official gameplay trailer below.
